Happy Faux Halloween!

Yesterday was our Halloween Rewind in Northampton and boy, folks came out in amazing numbers. Honestly-we’ve never seen this many people come through the store for downtown trick-or-treating.

We managed to take a few shots of our favorite costumes. Hope you all had fun and thanks for coming in!

We love this particular Pippi for so very many reasons.

This handmade R2D2 costume is just perfect!

The sister/brother duo of M&M and Eminem.

For pure creativity, this kid may have been my favorite. The Press-complete with press passes, cameras, and a plaid tie. Love it!

Cute babies in outfits. Works every time. Especially when it’s twins!

There were candy lines for most of the afternoon.

Yeah-this frog costume was amazing. Whoever made this – kudos to you!

Out on the streets, these guys did a bit of a Jabbawockeez thing.

Don’t watch ABDC? Ask your kids.

Thanks again for coming and we will see you next year!

Star Wars meets Pacman-clearly the best of both worlds

Awesome Lego Pacman Walker. It’s almost as if Pacman has gone 3D, and more. (via)

The Perfect Black Swan Wallpaper

A Pee Wee you can snuggle

I wish I could see Pee Wee on Broadway these days. But until I get there, I’ll have to make do with this Amigurumi Pee Wee. Um yeah-And Chairy!

Wish I had some crochet talent so I could make this for myself. Or for my special friend who LOVES some Pee Wee.

Halloween Recap: The Good, The Awesome and the Adorable.

Last Sunday was Halloween, and essentials Northampton participated in the Downtown Trick-or-Treat, as we do every year.  We’re very serious about this task.  We laugh in the face of stores who run out of candy around 2:30.  Colette, our ever-vigilant manager, stocked us up on candy.  And not the cheap stuff you throw away or pawn off on your siblings.  She got us the goods.  We were giving out Reese’s cups, Kit-Kats, Butterfingers, Hershey’s milk chocolate AND dark chocolate, Lemonheads, Apple Heads, Grape Heads, all sorts of fruity goods and more.  The store was manned by Hannah and myself, both of us supremely jazzed to check out costumes all day, and both in costume ourselves.  Hannah was a dunce, complete with dunce cap and misspelled words on her shirt.  I opted to go as Bjork, thanks to an old swan-dress costume that our craftiest essentials employee, Emily, made a few years back.  I spent the day getting lots of props from people who recognized me, and getting confused for a goose or regular old swan by other people who didn’t.

Our candy bowl. This was maybe only ten percent of the actual candy volume we had for the day.

Once the kiddies started rolling in, the day kicked off.  It was a madhouse.  People really take their Halloween seriously here.  Costumes included Harry Potters of all shapes and sizes, one poor lone Ron Weasley and one Dobby.  The construction worker was also big this year, but while some kids were excited to announce that they were Bob the Builder, one little dude had a nametag that emphatically stated his name as NOT BOB.  We also had what I imagine was the entire Northampton chapter of the witches coven out to seek candy and cast spells.  Tons of witches!  Tons of fairies of all kinds, too.  Flower fairies, fall fairies, Disney princesses in droves.  Vampires were also a hit this year too, but instead of the Twilight kind I imagine we’d get, we were overloaded with the old school variety.  I’m talking white faces, bloody mouths and big Victorian dresses.  And finally, two little wild things with long fuzzy tails bigger than they were.

Some of the stranger and super creative costumes were a pair of salt and pepper shakers, a homemade Thing 1 and Thing 2 from the Cat in the Hat, and a homemade Buzz Lightyear.  I know, Buzz is pretty standard Halloween fare, but this costume was made by a mom by hand, and it was totally legit.  It even had his wings!  Hannah and I applauded her craftiness.  There also seemed to be a candy theme this year amongst the kiddies.  We had a mom dressed up as a bag of skittles, a box of Orbit gum and some M&Ms.

But it’s always the costumes that I don’t understand upon first glance that I really love.  We had a little guy come in dressed in what I thought was safari gear, but I saw that he had tools strapped to his vest.  He had a ruler, a chisel, and a paintbrush.  I asked him what he was, maybe an artist?  A house painter?  “A PALEONTOLOGIST!” he said, grabbed his candy, and was off.  Adorable!  You know that kid told his mom he wanted to be a paleontologist for Halloween and she looked at him, sighed, and started googling for ideas.  We also had an olderish girl, maybe twelve or thirteen years old, dressed up as Abby Sciuto, from the show NCIS. Now, I understand that not everyone gives as much of a hoot about network television shows as I do, but I always get really excited when young girls choose to dress up as someone original, strong, smart and a little weird.  So wherever you are, I give your costume highest honors.

Finally, the babies.  I am a sucker for a baby dressed up like an animal.  I spent way too much time cooing over tiny bees, tiny lambs, tiny elephants, lions, giraffes and bears, puppies, kittens… there were too many to count.  Also, baby super heroes!  Who doesn’t love a little guy in a muscle suit and superhero costume?

Here are some pictures of the essentials staff enjoying their Halloween times, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Our buddy Matt stopped by to see how we were doing on candy. We were down to dum-dums. As you can see, Matt went as Alan from The Hangover, complete with baby Carlos. He said he got a lot of funny looks from people who didn't realize it wasn't a real baby...

Me and my favorite ARF trooper. When I asked his dad what an ARF trooper was, his response was "Star Wars... recon... something."

Hannah, the dunce on Saturday night, with Emily, the mermaid. Emily also crafted my Bjork swan. They look great!

Vintage Stars – They’re just like us! (At least according to these books)

They visit old friends, they do favors, they go to weddings. But, because they’re stars-there is ALWAYS a special twist. At least, according to this amazing set of books I saw this weekend at one of my secret haunts.

Who knew that Betty Grable, Dorothy Lamour, Judy Garland, and Gene Tierney led such exciting lives outside of Hollywood?

I think I might need to go back and buy the entire set!

Wii love our Legos

Can’t resist this. My son loves our Playstation, but if he saw this, he’d be begging for a Wii, just to have the chance to build his own remote.

According to Design Boom, the remote kit is “ideal for LEGO and nintendo enthusiasts…it is now possible to build your own wii remote
out of lego. the toys ”r” us exclusive, ‘play and build remote for nintendo wii’,
is a build-it-youself kit that comes with a controller that features a face and battery cover with lego plugs. you can add your own pieces to upgrade your controller to your liking, or play around with the 31 minitiles already included in the package.  also included in the kit is a tile pick for when you want to dismantle your work for a new look.

In a Perfect World, I’d Have a Print of Each of These.

Since I have no graphic design ability myself, I’m envious of people who do and find myself stalking websites, tumblrs and other means of imagehosting in search of things that I adore.  A website called Toothpaste Frosting has a great set of sleek, modern images with only two or three colors apiece that discuss what small elements of life would be different in a perfect world.  Whimsical, cute and colorful.  I’d like one of each to hang on my wall, please.  Here are only a few of my favorites, but check out the website for the rest.

I LOVE this one. The colors are so vivid and the sentiment, so true.

Another favorite. I'm really drawn to the simplicity of this one.

I’m trying to think of ones I’d like to see.  In a perfect world, there’s always a parking spot by the entrance.  In a perfect world, the bus is always on time.  In a perfect world, it would always be a good hair day.  In a perfect world…

Quick and Easy Cuteness for your hair

Here’s one of those projects I absolutely would have done as a kid. (Yes, I grew up in the 80s and I rocked the braided ribbon barrettes to match my outfits. I also remember one instance of slim rainbow stripe ribbon that I wore as a necktie with a blue polo shirt, collar up, and a red crewneck sweater. And yes, the “tie” was worn outside the sweater.)

According to Small Magazine, the project is super easy, and looks very fun to me.

You will need:

Fabric pieces between 6-12 cm square (cotton is ideal)

A tiny bit of felt

Hair slides

Scissors

 Craft glue

What to do: Cut your fabric into a circle with an indent of around 1cm (see picture).
Then cut a spiral into your circle so that you have a long 1cm wide twirl of fabric. Holding the middle, twist the fabric around itself to create a sort of flower (it will naturally want to do this), and when you get to the end, secure it with a dab of glue.   Take the felt and cut a small circle about the same size as the bottom of your little flower. Place it at the end of your hair slide, between the two ‘prongs’. Put a dab of glue on the felt, and lots on the bottom of the flower so that all the raw edges of the fabric are covered, and gently press the two together.

Let it dry thoroughly and that’s it! You could then decorate by gluing little buttons or sequins or beads or flowers into the middle, or you could dip the petal edges in glue and then glitter. The same process can be used to make flower badges, and if you want to give them as gifts you can present them on a piece of colored card (see pictures).

 And VOILA! Cuteness is made!
