Jigsaw your PB&J

As I struggle the idea that back-to-school means more lunches, after all the ones my son didn’t eat this summer at camp, I am thinking I might need to get something that makes his sandwich look like this:

Thanks to Michelle, at Cute Everything, I have now discovered Lunch Punch Sandwich Cutters. With the Puzzle Cutter, you can even make a cake!

Of course, I don’t need a cake. A sandwich he’d actually eat would be good enough. And actually, I kind of want to make a puzzle for myself.

For puzzle artists, there is one special word of advice: use Large bread.

Wonder Bread-for more than just your Peanut Butter and Jelly

In my continued adoration of all things embroidered, I can’t resist posting these images from artist Catherine Mcever–Wonder Bread Woman. Who would have thought Wonder bread could look so good? (via)

A yummy cup of tea, and a snack, all in one!

How cute are these tea cups? They might actually make my son want to have a tea party. (via)

Bread Shoes!! My carb-dreams realized!!!

Oh my goodness. I am so excited about this, I don’t know what to think. If only I had a pair to wear for Thanksgiving.

Via ChocolateSuze, I am thrilled to learn about this edible footwear. Too bad the children’s sizes are sold out-it would solve all the problems we have packing lunch for my son.

You can get your very own pair at dadadastudio,  available in various grains. According to their site, the shoe are “first in fashion…for interesting lifestyle…
needs no pressing…dries itself…” Thank goodness!

My mom says “I bet they’re really soft. Better than Uggs.” Perhaps we’ll make a pair, since we also found this video on how to make your own very special Bread Shoes!

I think after we put in our turkey tomorrow, we’ll spend the day basting and making our shoes. I’m sure they’ll go with anything and if not, well, Yum!

Don’t shop for Korean Food on a Sunday afternoon

At least not at H-Mart, the new Asian grocery store in Burlington, Massachusetts. Of course, that’s what we did, and it was actually a lot of fun. Crazy with crowds, and attracting so many people, they have police stationed in the parking lot, H-Mart opened in late September and if yesterday’s throngs were any indication, it’s a huge success. With 40 stores located all over the country, H-Mart is capitalizing on what they see as a growing and broad-based appeal of ethnically Asian foods.

The store is enormous, with an entire aisle just for noodles, a kimchi bar, a Korean bakery, and a food court offering the korean goodies we can’t typically find around here. (We had mixed feelings about some of the food court offerings–the dukbokgi was a bit too chewy and the Pa Jun was terrible. But our son loved the dumplings, my husband had some decent Indian food. and I loved a baguette from the bakery.)

The whole experience can be a little overwhelming, and next time, we plan on going with a list, some recipes, and NOT on a weekend. Even though the store is Korean-American, the offerings are varied and range from Vietnamese to Indian to Japanese, Chinese, and more. We stocked up on some of our son’s favorite snack foods-including the biggest bag of shrimp crackers we’ve ever seen.

I’ll admit that I’m a total sucker for packaging, and when you can’t read what’s inside, the packages look even more compelling. I could have spend hours just photographing the ways different spices, noodles, rices, drinks, and snack foods were presented. At the very least, I did what my phone could do and snapped a few shots.

Raw Meat, Wine, and Essentials

It’s the time of year at Essentials when we start to remember the things that make us love Thanksgiving. Raw Meat, chasing turkeys, wine too early in the day, andof course, leftovers. In the spirit of of the holiday, and because I have a kid in elementary school, we’ve dedicated our window to Thanksgiving Reflections from our staff, and some fabulous five-finger turkeys. Okay, we’ve also put some goodies from the store in there, but since we call ourselves the Essentials Family, really, it’s all about the memories.
(Our first Thanksgiving in the Valley, my family and I awoke to find no less than eleven wild turkeys seeking refuge in the brambles in our yard. We felt just slightly guilty putting their cousin in our oven…)
Stop by our Northampton store to share in the memories, and just in case you can’t, here’s a few photos. And feel free to offer a few of your own memories here!
