Stenciling with Lotta, you lucky ducks

In Brooklyn on the 18th of August? I’m jealous, because it means you might be able to Stencil with Lotta Jansdotter. The brilliant craftsress is hosting an open studio/stenciling fiesta. (She’s also a super nice person so you’ll be lucky just to meet her.)

If you go, and make a totebag, will you send us a photo? Please?

Bastille Day Sale Today!!

It’s Bastille Day-Use it wisely

Spend your day getting ready for the Essentials Bastille Day Celebration, Saturday, July 17th. In the time you’re not preparing your costume, writing your poem, preparing us French delicacies, and learning a scene from your most beloved French film, you can try some of these fun things.

The Guardian has a special way for you to brush up on your Bastille Day literary references with a Quiz on the Bastille in Literature. Do you know the answer to this one:

In which children’s book does a girl cheer herself up by pretending that she is a prisoner in the Bastille?

I particularly like the guy in his sandals. Very nice. (Photo courtesy of The Washington Post.)

In Danville, California? There’s a Bastille Day Mixer for you single folks, only $5 if you are of French ancestry. It might be the only time a person could get date points for wearing a beret.

My personal favorite? The Wire Caption Contest for this photo of everyone’s favorite French car, the Citreon. As you ponder your caption, perhaps a poem will come to mind…

Get started on your studying, and we’ll see you on Saturday!

Headspace on Scent and Design

One of our wonderful employees, Ms. Emily, is knowledgeable about perfume and scent with an appreciation and understanding I confess to being a bit jealous of. I am delighted that she is in New York right now, getting ready to attend an incredible day at The New School tomorrow.

Headspace 2010 “is a one-day symposium on the  conception, impact, and potential applications of scent.” Headspace explores not just the design of scent, but also the possible applications. A who’s-who of the scent world, the “event gathers leading thinkers, designers, scientists, artists, established perfumers as well as ‘accidental perfumers’ (a selection of architects, designers, and chefs invited to experiment with scent) to acknowledge scent as a new territory for design.” (via)

Want to smell fancy yourself? Visit the Essentials’ Bath section to see our own curated selection of French perfumes from Fragonard and L’epi de Provence.

If only they had story hour for adults too…

One of my favorite memories from when my guy was little is time spent at the Jones Library in Amherst. Each Thursday morning, my guy and I would take our coffee–okay, I would take MY very large coffee–and trek to the library for stories. What did Nan read? I don’t really remember, because it wasn’t about that. Instead, it was a place to gather, for children to explore books and interact with one another. (I also think it was good for building his immune system.)

Needless to say, we are happy to support the library’s Annual Valentine’s Day Basket Auction. Visit the library between February 3rd and the 11th to bid on your favorite baskets, and hopefully win a treat for Valentine’s Day!

Charlie Chaplin Tonight in Easthampton

If you haven’t introduced your kids to Charlie Chaplin yet, don’t wait another day! (Unless you don’t want to hear them with incredible belly laughs, practically losing control of themselves as they giggle madly at Chaplin’s crazy antics.)

We took our son to see a night of Chaplin films at Mass Moca a year ago, and loved them so much, we can’t pass up tonight’s event at the Emily Williston Memorial Library, in Easthampton.

Starting at 6 p.m. the library will screen Chaplin silent classics The Cure, Behind the Screen, The Immigrant, and The Rink. (As a roller skating fan, The Rink is a personal favorite since it showcases Chaplin’s amazing skating skills!0

Can’t wait until tonight, or need more convincing? Okay, here’s a little taste…
