Celebrating LOVE at Essentials (and our new window display!)

Hello from Essentials! Yes, this blog has had a bit of hiatus but now that the holiday season is over, we can return to normal. And get ready for LOVE.

Today, some photos from our newest window, a celebration of marriage featuring a collaboration between Essentials, the wonderful Sandra Costello of Studio SMC Photography, and Pearl Bridal Boutique, a terrific source for stunning wedding fashions.

Essentials’ addition to the mix? Our wide array of paper goodness. Invitations, programs, banners, thank yous, labels, table cards – we could go on and on.

Our favorite part? The chance to work with some other terrific local business, supporting one another and showcasing the variety of services available in our little Valley. Remember – shop local!

The DIY Doily Dish for someone WAAAYYY more talented than I.

According to this DIY Doily Dish Tutorial at Sodapop Design, anyone should be able to do this. HA!

In my dreams. Any of you crafty enough to try this? And if you do, let’s just say I WANT, WANT, WANT!

Show your love, calligraphy style

I know it’s not really near Valentine’s Day yet, but I am in love with this idea and had to share it.

A personalized love letter, calligraphied for you by the lovely woman behind Linea Carta.

add your sentiments in the comments area at purchase (25 words max), and i will calligraph your note, then calligraph the address of the lucky recipient (i will need this from you too- along with your return address). finally i’ll seal the envelope with an antique wax seal and delicate bird’s nest twine. such a lovely gift to receive in the mail!

Agreed.

(Doesn’t exactly meet your needs? Don’t forget-we offer custom printing at Essentials!)

Neatness Counts

What is it that makes me so happy when I look at Things Organized Neatly? Perhaps a break from the constant chaos that is our life. A time to take a breath?

As far as I’m concerned, everyone deserves at least one moment like this each day. And if you celebrate Christmas, Happy Christmas Eve! (Thanks Paper Tastebuds!)

Famille Summerbelle-a whole world of things for me to love

A while ago, I featured the gorgeous papercut maps from Famille Summerbelle. Now, a beautiful World Map pattern.

And bags based on these papercuts. London, New York, and Paris.

I am also in awe of the gorgeous wallpaper, made to order. Available in Dressing Up and Kissing Birds.

Finally, I love the prints. Count the Sweets on this one.

Or search for the M, on this Alphabet Print.

Can you spot the Hidden M?

Why shouldn’t Christmas have tropical flowers?

A few sneak peeks of our holiday window. There’s something about looking at it in the evening that makes it feel that much more special. Of course, it’s always best when you come see it in person.

And yes, we have the flowers and banners for sale at the store. As for the wreaths? We can sell you the supplies, but you’ll have to use your own crafty skills to make one for yourself.

Butterfly Papercraft from The Gilded Bee

Usually, I put butterflies in the same category as dragonflies. Stunning in real life, but when imitated, slightly cloying and cliche. These butterflies, however, from The Gilded Bee, have captivated me.

The Gilded Bee has more than just butterflies. Paper craft of all sorts, including these flowers where her lovely butterflies might alight for a moment.

I also love her bunting. Perfect for a party I’m planning in my head, but don’t know the occasion yet. Suggestions?

Beautiful Textiles that support good things-a perfect Essentials combination!

It is always a delight when beautiful new things come to the store, but I was especially pleased to receive one of our most recent orders. Stunning quilts, coasters, oven mitts, and more.

Colette and I were instantly struck by the brilliant colors and beauty in these textile products made in Ghana. After much time spent choosing our favorites, we were sold when speaking with Ronnie Shaw of the Sankofa Center for African Dance and Culture.

The Sankofa Center is a non-profit organization  whose mission is “to utilize traditional African dance, music, and drama to preventatively educate youths & adults about HIV/AIDS, and provide free counseling, rapid HIV/AIDS testing, & life-saving drugs for people living with HIV/AIDS. We strive to use the realms of the arts as a tool to foster open communication, accurate knowledge, and promote healthy behavior change to protect, empower, and bring togetherness to our human family in the face of this world-wide disease.” (via)

The Sankofa Center sells these beautifully made items to fund their work, and we hope you love them as much as we do.

Halloween Recap: The Good, The Awesome and the Adorable.

Last Sunday was Halloween, and essentials Northampton participated in the Downtown Trick-or-Treat, as we do every year.  We’re very serious about this task.  We laugh in the face of stores who run out of candy around 2:30.  Colette, our ever-vigilant manager, stocked us up on candy.  And not the cheap stuff you throw away or pawn off on your siblings.  She got us the goods.  We were giving out Reese’s cups, Kit-Kats, Butterfingers, Hershey’s milk chocolate AND dark chocolate, Lemonheads, Apple Heads, Grape Heads, all sorts of fruity goods and more.  The store was manned by Hannah and myself, both of us supremely jazzed to check out costumes all day, and both in costume ourselves.  Hannah was a dunce, complete with dunce cap and misspelled words on her shirt.  I opted to go as Bjork, thanks to an old swan-dress costume that our craftiest essentials employee, Emily, made a few years back.  I spent the day getting lots of props from people who recognized me, and getting confused for a goose or regular old swan by other people who didn’t.

Our candy bowl. This was maybe only ten percent of the actual candy volume we had for the day.

Once the kiddies started rolling in, the day kicked off.  It was a madhouse.  People really take their Halloween seriously here.  Costumes included Harry Potters of all shapes and sizes, one poor lone Ron Weasley and one Dobby.  The construction worker was also big this year, but while some kids were excited to announce that they were Bob the Builder, one little dude had a nametag that emphatically stated his name as NOT BOB.  We also had what I imagine was the entire Northampton chapter of the witches coven out to seek candy and cast spells.  Tons of witches!  Tons of fairies of all kinds, too.  Flower fairies, fall fairies, Disney princesses in droves.  Vampires were also a hit this year too, but instead of the Twilight kind I imagine we’d get, we were overloaded with the old school variety.  I’m talking white faces, bloody mouths and big Victorian dresses.  And finally, two little wild things with long fuzzy tails bigger than they were.

Some of the stranger and super creative costumes were a pair of salt and pepper shakers, a homemade Thing 1 and Thing 2 from the Cat in the Hat, and a homemade Buzz Lightyear.  I know, Buzz is pretty standard Halloween fare, but this costume was made by a mom by hand, and it was totally legit.  It even had his wings!  Hannah and I applauded her craftiness.  There also seemed to be a candy theme this year amongst the kiddies.  We had a mom dressed up as a bag of skittles, a box of Orbit gum and some M&Ms.

But it’s always the costumes that I don’t understand upon first glance that I really love.  We had a little guy come in dressed in what I thought was safari gear, but I saw that he had tools strapped to his vest.  He had a ruler, a chisel, and a paintbrush.  I asked him what he was, maybe an artist?  A house painter?  “A PALEONTOLOGIST!” he said, grabbed his candy, and was off.  Adorable!  You know that kid told his mom he wanted to be a paleontologist for Halloween and she looked at him, sighed, and started googling for ideas.  We also had an olderish girl, maybe twelve or thirteen years old, dressed up as Abby Sciuto, from the show NCIS. Now, I understand that not everyone gives as much of a hoot about network television shows as I do, but I always get really excited when young girls choose to dress up as someone original, strong, smart and a little weird.  So wherever you are, I give your costume highest honors.

Finally, the babies.  I am a sucker for a baby dressed up like an animal.  I spent way too much time cooing over tiny bees, tiny lambs, tiny elephants, lions, giraffes and bears, puppies, kittens… there were too many to count.  Also, baby super heroes!  Who doesn’t love a little guy in a muscle suit and superhero costume?

Here are some pictures of the essentials staff enjoying their Halloween times, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Our buddy Matt stopped by to see how we were doing on candy. We were down to dum-dums. As you can see, Matt went as Alan from The Hangover, complete with baby Carlos. He said he got a lot of funny looks from people who didn't realize it wasn't a real baby...

Me and my favorite ARF trooper. When I asked his dad what an ARF trooper was, his response was "Star Wars... recon... something."

Hannah, the dunce on Saturday night, with Emily, the mermaid. Emily also crafted my Bjork swan. They look great!

Wallpaper I want to craft with

I’ve never had a desire for wallpaper, but I do now. Loving these new wallpapers from Joy Deangdeelert Cho, the lovely woman behind Oh Joy! Made by Hygge & West, I’m tempted to order the $5 sample pack, just to use for crafting. Would that be kind of against the rules?
